Anne Michaelsen, an interior designer in Newport Beach, California, recently used Sunbrella fabrics to transform her great room. Anne’s style is both modern and classic and she aims to design comfortable, contemporary spaces with a respect for architectural and design history.
She’s used to designing beautiful spaces for clients, but this project was a bit more personal. For her home, which she shares with her husband and two Aussie Doodles, Michealsen wanted to create a comfortable space for their family, including their adult children and extended family and friends. “My process was to analyze what we had, what we needed to change, modernize the look and to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living space,” she said.
Michaelsen wanted her indoor space to flow seamlessly with her outdoor space. “The interior furniture pieces have exceptional durability,” she noted. She chose Sunbrella fabrics because of their ability to stand up to the beautiful rays of sunshine that stream into her great room. By selecting Sunbrella fabrics with UV resistance, Michaelsen doesn’t need to worry aboutnatural light resulting in fading. “Doors should open as much as possible to bring in natural light and connect the exterior to the interior,” she said. She recommends incorporating plants to help bring the exterior inside for a seamless flow for a great room with a view.
Michaelsen used Array Calypso to bring in that natural green and feature a pop of fun geometric work. She also used Resonate Atlantis to add a graphic and color dimension that did not overpower her calming atmosphere. She then layered in Depth Calypso for additional texture, color, and dimension.
To achieve this indoor-outdoor great room transitional area, Michelsen recommends choosing flooring and fabrics that can easily transition from indoors to outside and to open the area up with doors as much as you can. She also recommends creating consistency in your color schemes.
