Clean Sunbrella Custom Drapery

One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella Custom Drapery looking good is to clean spills promptly after they occur and brush off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric. The quicker you clean the spills, the easier they can be to remove.

Try this first... With a new spill on your Sunbrella Drapery.

  • Clean with a low-suction handheld vacuum or dust with a soft, clean cloth or feather duster. Never immerse your window treatment in liquid of any type.
  • Blot (do not rub) liquid spills with a clean, dry cloth.
  • For oil-based spills, apply an absorbent, such as cornstarch, directly on the spill. Let sit for 10 minutes and remove the excess using a straight edge.
  • Use Sunbrella Clean™ Multi-Purpose Fabric Cleaner or spray on a mild cleaning solution of soap and water.
  • Rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove all residue.
  • Air dry.

Try this next... If your first try doesn't get the spill completely out.

Add Bleach

For more stubborn spills, we would recommend adding a 1:5 ratio of bleach to a soap and water solution. Only apply the bleach solution to the Sunbrella face fabric. Then rinse the treated area thoroughly.

Oil-Based Stains

If a stubborn oil-based stain persists after cleaning, use Sunbrella Extract™ Oil Based Stain Remover or treat with a strong degreaser and rinse thoroughly.

Specific information on spill cleaning is available in our Cleaning Guide.

Steam to Remove Wrinkles

Use a steamer or steam iron set to the synthetic setting to remove wrinkles and creases from your custom window drapery panel. As iron temperatures may vary, first test a small inconspicuous area before ironing the entire panel.

Helpful Hints

While Sunbrella fabric offers excellent protection against spills, full removal is not always guaranteed if spills are not addressed promptly.

Avoid scrubbing, hard bristle brushes or any other abrasive cleaning method.

Sunbrella Custom Drapery should only be air dried.

Protect liners and other materials (grommets, corner weights, etc.) that make up your Sunbrella Custom Drapery when using bleach, degreasers or other chemical solvents. Only apply these treatments to the Sunbrella fabric to avoid discoloration of other components. Thoroughly rinse treated Sunbrella face fabric to remove all chemicals and spill residue.

Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you. Please follow all safety and environmental precautions according to the bleach label.

Professional Cleaners

Should you want to enlist the help of a professional cleaner, we recommend inquiring about a firm’s experience working with acrylic fabrics and knowledge of cleaning window treatments.

Seam-to-Seam Cleaning

When cleaning, clean the entire surface area of the drapery, from seam to seam, instead of rubbing the fabric in a circular motion on the spill only. This method may be required in order to avoid water rings and residue.
